NSW building regulator: NSW Fair Trading & Building Commission NSW

    Last updated 6 Jun 2026

In NSW, building and trade licensing sits with NSW Fair Trading, alongside Building Commission NSW, under the Home Building Act 1989 (NSW). They license contractors, oversee the Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) home warranty scheme, and help resolve building disputes.

Check a licence, or lodge a complaint: call 13 32 20 or use the Fair Trading website.

Building work itself is approved through a principal certifier (private or council) against the National Construction Code — separate from your contractor licence.
